Let’s admit it; there are just as many reasons for you to want to eat healthier as there are reasons why it’s hard to say no to that choco fudge cupcake in the fridge.

The thing about healthy eating is that it isn’t much different from making other life-altering changes; it is much easier done with the support of the people important to you. Getting support is something you should consider, if you haven’t already.

 Why get support

There’s no questioning the fact that the support of people who matter to you is an integral part when making important life changes.

Whether it is in changing career paths, daily exercise routines, or eating patterns, support can make the transition feel less of a painful chore and more of an exciting journey.

It has also been shown that support can help make the change work better. In fact, one research conducted in 2007 shows that the support given by people around you is vital. With the support of your partner in life, your family, and friends, it becomes that much easier to make behavioral changes that may affect your health, including your eating habits.

Who to get support from

Support can come from practically anybody. Ideally, the people within your home should be your first level of support. That is, they are the people from whom you’ll expect the greatest amount of support.

Your friends should also be in on the plan, especially if you hang out with them a lot. This way, they’ll be aware of what restaurants to choose when going out, or what food to prepare during visits.

There are, however, cases wherein the people you expect to support you may do the exact opposite. When your family and friends make it harder for you to change your eating habits, you can always look to healthy eating support groups.

Though not really popular, these support groups do exist. Some of them are online groups where people share tips and encouragement through forums and social media pages. Others prefer going on actual group gatherings to help make the support feel more tangible to them.

What it involves

Healthy eating support can come in many forms.

The easiest and most common form of support you may get is through verbal encouragement. This may be through positive words that remind you of how far you’ve gone. This may also be through gentle reminders of why you’re doing this, in case you are ever tempted to go off track.

Support may also come in the form of actions, depending on how willing the people around you are in participating. It can be something as simple as letting them monitor your changes, or asking your family to be mindful of your new eating habits when they go to the grocery or prepare family meals. If they are feeling up to it, you can also convince them to join you in making the change to healthier eating.

Eating habits are hard to change, mostly because they’re something you’ve lived with ever since you were a kid. The good news is, it is not impossible.

Don’t choose to be alone in your journey to healthy eating. Get the support that you need.
